Season and visits

Potato timing depends on place, weather and variety. The farm hasn't published its own calendar, so this page covers the general potato year and how to check timing with the farm.

The general potato year

A broad guide to how a potato crop progresses. It isn't this farm's schedule.

  1. Planting

Seed potatoes, whole or cut into pieces, go into the ground once the soil has warmed.

  2. Hilling

As shoots come up, soil is drawn up around the stems into ridges. That keeps the forming potatoes covered.

  3. Flowering

Many varieties flower around the time potatoes start forming underground. The flowers can be white, pink or purple.

  4. Growing on

The potatoes size up while the leaves stay green. Later the tops yellow and die back, or are cut back.

  5. Harvest and storage

The crop is dug, and potatoes are usually given time for their skins to firm before they go into storage.

Weather moves the dates

Wet ground, frost or a dry spell can push planting and harvest earlier or later. Check timing with the farm before you plan around it.
